YOUNG MEMORY
Exhibition opening: 20. 11. 2019 / 19.00 hod. Exhibition's duration: 21. 11. - 15. 12. 2019 Exhibition's curator: Ján Triaška, Adam Macko
The exhibition of the youngest generation of visual artists, who are united by studies at the Department of Painting FVU AU in Banská Bystrica under the title “Young Memory”, focuses on the phenomenon of memory, in the context of the prism of young authors’ perception of the current socio-cultural situation in Slovakia. Individual and dynamic approaches of the artists, in the medium of painting, complement the content of the exhibition. The presented collection of works offers one of the possible views on the perception of the past in the context of current realities and authors’ poetics. Memory has a selective character. The perception of the young generation of contemporary authors is key to understanding the reflection of the awareness of the emotional and factual deposits of the past on our present, actions and motivations. The exhibition works in a relatively wide range of authors’ poetics, which map perceptions from intimate memories to historical contexts and critically re-evaluate them. The mosaic of one of the possible views on this topic has the character of a probe that monitors the efforts of contemporary authors to understand themselves, and at the same time to express their opinion on the context that defines our present and ultimately determines the future.
/ Ján Triaška
One of the significant strategies of contemporary painting is the introspective thematization of the author’s work itself. Selected artists of the youngest generation evaluate the individual relationship to themselves as creators and their correlation to the world – despite their relatively young age and experience, they consider it relevant to evaluate. This suggests generational shifts in the contextualization of memory and its meaning. The early critical perception of the art institutionalization (both in the process of education and in the subsequent artistic work) is a reaction to the opaque forms of art presentation and the position of the artist entering it. It is not necessarily just economic factors – neoliberal strategies accelerating processes, as they are not the only cause. By turning to the memory of the inner experience, selected authors form against facing the staginess of the visual image. At the same time, the exhibition is an extensive critical assessment of to which the introspective method is analytical and to which it is reactionary – and to what extent the authors themselves consciously reflect.
