FESTIVAL MATRIOSHKA – Matchbox Art Made in Czechoslovakia

Within the cooperation of Šopa Gallery and Salon fotografie, an original exhibition of match stickers “Matchbox Art Made in Czechoslovakia” was created, which was opened by the Matrioshka Festival.

The collection contains 1344 stickers from the 50s and 60s of the last century and comes from a much larger private collection. In their time, Czech and Slovak stickers played the role of propaganda, advertising, job recruitment and vigorously encouraged the orderly life of a socialist man. Czechoslovakia was one of the largest producers of matches in the world. Thanks to this, “enlightenment” could easily spread and the information from the stickers could get into every household, every workplace and, thanks to the very widespread smoking, into everyday social life. The stickers could be glued together and for collectors who collected them in collections, specialized print with clear cataloguing was published.
