The exhibition of the Czech sculptor Matouš Lipus presents the latest works created in 2018. The author, who has been working for a long time and referring to the context of art history, asks questions about classical sculptural canons within his current installation. As a figuralist, Lipus also perceives public space, which, as a system of social interaction between the statue, space and the recipient, exhibits critical reflection. Lipus responds with the site-specific principle to the long-term and overlooked problems of the city of Košice and its sculptures in public space. The expressive figure in a rough outline defines the relationship between the sculpture and the platform, which are part of the architectural-visual identity of the city. The author created an object for the Šopa Gallery – a relief that works with the territorial plan of Orlia and Zvonárská streets in Košice, in a space that has long been exposed to discussions and criticism between the professional community, the general public and municipal politics. The English name of the exhibition is a free translation by internet translators, resp. incorrectly translated as “lack of compassion”. This linguistic anomaly gives rise to characteristic symbolism, which refers to the insufficient aesthetic and critical perception of the living space of places where sculptures in public space represent mostly unnoticed and underappreciated elements of architectural ensembles.

Matouš Lipus (1987) is a Czech sculptor, a representative of the contemporary generation of visual artists. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Prof. Jan Hendrych, Dominik Lang) and from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (Prof. Kurt Gebauer). In 2012, he completed an internship at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. He currently works at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague as a doctoral student in the Sculpture Studio of Tomáš Hlavin. He lives and works in Prague.
