Katarína Tekeľová - Blažová

HAPPY DAYS

 

The exhibition Katarína Tekeľová Blažová, who’s based in Košice, presents a selection of her most current paintings. For new realizations, the author chooses drawings, from which she creates new compositions using the system of collage and xeroxing. She is intensely interested in the inner world of women, their stories and loneliness in the continuing supremacy of the male principle in life. The topic of misunderstanding, loss or inability to communicate in interpersonal relationships leads the author to the plays of Samuel Beckett, from whom she took the name for a new series of paintings – Happy Days.

Katarína Tekeľová Blažová (* 1945) is a painter, author of tapestries and art-protists. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava – Department of Free Painting and Tapestry of Professor Petr Matejka (1965 – 1971). Between 1979 and 1989, she realized several works of art within architecture in the techniques of art-protis, bound and woven tapestries, mosaics and stained glass. The woven and tied tapestries in cooperation with the Moravian Tapestry Manufactory in Valašské Meziříčí, including a large tapestry from the early period Interview in the Garden (1971), a cycle of eleven Moira tapestries (1994 -1996) and a hand-woven curtain Fénix for the State Theater in Košice on the basis of a public competition (1990). In 2012, she became a finalist in painting and graphics at the prestigious international Celeste Prize for Contemporary Art.

The author’s tapestries and paintings have been presented at several home and foreign solo exhibitions: Moira-Tapestries / Paintings – SNM Bratislava Castle (1996), East Slovak Gallery Košice (1996), SNG Zvolen Castle (1998), Slovak Cultural Institute Budapest (1998), Austrian Cultural Center – Palais Pallfy Vienna (1998), DNA – Paintings / Tapestries – Dom umenia, Bratislava (2008), Woman in Love / Mother / Mystic – Retrospective 1968 – 2015, East Slovak Museum in Košice, Central Slovak Gallery in Banská Bystrica (2016). She has participated in several collective exhibitions: Actual Textile Art, Konsolidační banka, Prague (1995), Tapestry / MGM, Amsterdam (1995), Tapestry, painting, space, House of Arts, Brno (1995), Actual Textile Art, Mánes Gallery, Prague ( 1997), Art 2007 – Interpretation of Reality, Dom umenia, Bratislava (2007), Papier Kole / Czech and Slovak Collage of the XX and XXI Centuries /, East Slovak Gallery, Košice (2012), Celeste Prize 2012, Centrale Montemartini Museum (Rome 2012), 7. Zlín Salon – Triennial of Contemporary Czech and Slovak Art, Zlín Gallery (2014). Her works are represented in collections in the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, the East Slovak Gallery in Košice, the Šariš Gallery in Prešov, in private collections in Slovakia and abroad.
