DO YOU KNOW YOU WILL DIE?

An interactive memento mori and an exhibition of mourning architecture from the Czech Republic

The theme of the exhibition is death, which our society cannot deal with and displaces it from life. It was prepared by architects Jan Alex Řezáč, František Košař and curator of fine arts, artist and photographer Jan Freiberg.

The first part of the exhibition consists of several examples of socialist mourning architecture, as well as architectural designs of mourning halls and cemeteries over the last twenty years from the area of Bohemia and Moravia. Despite the fact that they were realized after 1989 compared to the communist era, the new designs reveal a greater desire for a living ritual of the last farewell, albeit by architects rather than clients. The exhibition is complemented by theoretical texts on the history of funeral architecture and its reflections, especially from the newspaper Galerie Na shledanou.

The art installation, which forms the second part of the exhibition, also seeks to deepen the relationship with death through ritual. Its authors invite the general public to stamp their name on the wall of the gallery and thus declare their own mortality. We know that Jan Freiberg will die, Jan Alex Řezáč will die, Petra Housková will die and all the names together will form a mosaic of future dead who are not afraid to sign up for our only security in life.

Exhibition of this gallery is supported by Tatra Bank Foundation (Nadácia Tatra Banky).

Cooperation: Galerie Na shledanou, cemetary Malsička, Volyně, Česká republika
